There is something almost enchanting about north- western New Jersey in the spring/summer: while other towns get hot and hazy, somehow places like Long Valley roll out a red carpet of seasonal invitations filled with the smell of fresh basil, tomatoes and strawberries.
Local farm stands like the one at Ort Farms are always filled with gorgeous produce and I enjoy visiting them and perusing the seasonal delights. Ort Farms is a 6th generation family owned farm that has been delivering fantastic farm to table produce to New Jersey residents since 1916. Harvey Ort, the patriarch of the family farm, works close with his family members in the daily navigating and overseeing of the farms operations. Over the years, the Ort’s have expanded and made extensive growth while keeping with the times but also remaining consistent: it’s become their mainstay and something that will always remain.
Ort Farms is proof that something truly magical happens when multiple generations come together to run a family business – tradition and knowledge merge with the past with the present, keeping the farm consistent yet modern and this is what keeps loyal customers returning year after year. My husband has been choosing his Halloween pumpkin there since he was three years old. In fact, he will not purchase a pumpkin from any other farm and already my children look forward to our Hayride, pumpkin-picking- adventures. There is something to be said about family traditions and knowing your farmer. I am always impressed at the way Ort Farms has built countless trusted relationships with their community.
Ort Farms has a beautiful stocked farm stand that offers fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, drinks, and local honey (just to name a few). Personally, my family enjoys their CSA and we always marvel at the absolutely gorgeous produce that never disappoints.
This year, in addition to the CSA farm stand pick up, Ort Farms is excited to add on a Wednesday pick up at the country corner store and they will be delivering to their Bayonne location as well as to a group share in the Lake Shawnee area. In addition, they work with groups who want to start shares at their home, churches, and workplaces. You can learn about the group program here.
It’s time you came out to Long Valley and experienced Ort Farms and all of their fantastic, seasonal delights. Tell them the MealDiva sent you.
